Monday Morning Reading List

Hello, readers! There’s been an influx of new subscribers over the past week or so. Welcome!

There has been a quiet stretch of writing and podcasting lately due three reasons:

  1. A vacation
  2. Day-job related work
  3. An upcoming manuscript deadline

Due to these factors, August will likely see a little less original writing than usual. I will work on formalizing a schedule that I will share later.

In the meantime, check out a couple of pieces of great writing from across the web.

Illuminations - Kristin Rawls

Kristin Rawls has begun writing a deeply researched series on how evangelicalism “grooms” children, not LGBTQ+ persons as part of their new Revue newsletter, Illuminations. It’s in multiple parts, and yes, this is the type of thing that comes with a content warning.

Elsewhere on Substack, tech culture writer Ryan Broderick wrote about the recent push by Instagram to remake itself in the image of TikTok, and posits that we are witnessing the end of social media’s central role in our online experience, drawing upon this piece at Axios.

Over the past few years, the term “exvangelical” has gained traction on social media, especially through Twitter & Facebook. One early criticism of “exvangelical” as a term was that it was overly negative. Since many of these conversations happened di…
White Evangelicalism Does Not Want to Be Reformed.
Earlier this week, Tish Harrison Warren published an article for Christianity Today called “The Church Needs Reformation, Not Deconstruction.” It is billed as “a short guide to the exvangelical movement.” While it does not quote from any well-known exvangelical figures, it does link to Brad Onishi’s (disclosure: my friend and fellow
As white evangelical hegemony ended, white Christian nationalist minority rule began.
White evangelicals in America have been heavily scrutinized—and rightly so—since the 2016 election cycle. Their widespread support of Trump & Trumpism escorted an unqualified, megalomaniacal, corrupt, amoral real estate “magnate” and reality-tv “star” to the White House.

I am an independent podcaster and writer. I make it because I am compelled to, and I am compelled to ask for support so that I can make even more.

I’d love to expand my work and dedicate more time to podcasting and writing. Direct support is the most viable way for me to do this, and a key reason why I started this Substack.
